    Description

The Seder on Pesach begins with the words: “We were slaves…” But what is the focus here — “We were slaves…” or “Our ancestors worshiped idols…”? In other words, should we concentrate on the national aspect of the story that we were enslaved and gained our freedom as a people? Or should we focus on the theological aspect that we moved from idolatry to monotheism?

Both questions are important, and perhaps the Seder invites us to reflect on them together, seeing how national and spiritual liberation are intertwined.
