Description
When I see challah and a kiddush glass flickering in the light of two burning candles, I’m filled with a deep sense of peace and anticipation. Shabbat has already arrived, and as the candles burn, the bracha has been said, and the table is set for the meal, there’s this joyful, almost mysterious feeling of the moment’s specialness. I can only imagine the presence of the person who lit the candles and prepared the table for Shabbat, painting only the trace of her hand. Outside the window, Jerusalem remains a vague outline, but its essence is unmistakable, and His presence feels tangible. Growing up, I wasn’t part of a traditional family, so experiencing Shabbat in this way, in the land of Israel, brings me profound awe and deep emotion.
