How Jewish Spirituality Shapes My Work
Jewish spirituality plays a central role in my artistic process. It’s not just a source of inspiration. It’s the lens through which I see the world. Many of my artworks reflect moments of prayer, Jewish rituals, and biblical stories that carry personal meaning. When I paint, I strive to capture not only the visual beauty of these scenes but also the essence of divine connection that lies beneath the surface.
One example is my series of The Splitting of the Red Sea. In these paintings, the intense colors and sweeping brushstrokes reflect the intensity of this miraculous moment. The swirling waters and small anonymous figures create a sense of power and awe. These artworks invite the viewers to step into that ancient scene. Here they can feel the fear, hope, and triumph of the Jewish people crossing to freedom.
Another piece, Light in the Streets of Jerusalem, captures a group of Hasidic Jews gathering in the streets to light the menorah. The warm glow of the candles contrasts with the cool blue sky. It symbolizes light overcoming darkness, a central theme of both the holiday and Jewish history. For me, this act of lighting the candles is more than a ritual. It’s a reminder of resilience and hope, even in challenging times.
Faith in My Personal Journey
My journey as a Jewish woman has been as transformative as my religious art. Originally from Moscow, my move to Israel sparked a profound shift in how I express my spirituality. Jerusalem’s ancient streets, rolling hills, and deep connection to Jewish history have left a mark on my art. Living in this land has given me a new perspective on what it means to be part of the Jewish story. It’s a perspective that I try to weave into each painting.
My paintings of Synagogues are an expression of love for sacred spaces. Spaces where faith and community come together in harmony. I’m drawn to capturing the spiritual essence of these synagogues. The soft glow of candlelight during prayer, the intricate beauty of ancient architecture, and the sense of peace that fills the air. My religious art is my way of honoring these sanctuaries. Hence preserving their timeless significance while inviting the viewer to step inside and experience the divine connection that they hold. These paintings are not just about physical buildings. They are about the soul of Jewish prayer, tradition, and the unbreakable bond between people and faith.
